Pipe Slope

Calculates pipe slope from upstream and downstream invert elevations.

Calculation method and use

Calculates pipe grade from upstream and downstream invert elevations and horizontal run. Useful for quick checks of gravity sewer and stormwater alignments.

Slope = (Upstream invert − Downstream invert) / Length

Example and practical interpretation

If the upstream invert is 100.00 m, downstream invert 99.70 m and length 60 m, the fall is 0.30 m and slope is 0.005 = 0.50% = 5‰.

Points to check

  • Use elevations referenced to the same datum.
  • Do not confuse horizontal run with sloping pipe length.
  • Check grade together with diameter, flow and hydraulic capacity.

Frequently asked questions

How is pipe slope calculated?

Divide the elevation difference by the horizontal pipe length.

What is 0.5% slope in per mille?

0.5% is equal to 5‰.

What does a negative slope indicate?

With the selected direction, the downstream invert is higher than the upstream invert, indicating reverse grade.

Pipe slope: from elevation difference to design grade

Pipe slope is the vertical fall between two invert elevations divided by horizontal run. The same grade can be expressed as percent, per mille or a 1:N ratio. CivilCalc calculates the geometry quickly; the references below help connect that result to profile design, setting out and hydraulic checks.

Core relationship

A positive fall occurs when the upstream invert is higher than the downstream invert. Use elevations on the same datum and horizontal plan length.

i = Δh / L   |   Slope (%) = i × 100   |   Slope (‰) = i × 1000

Worked profile example

Upstream invert 336.0 ft, downstream invert 333.05 ft and run 196.85 ft give about 2.95 ft of fall. i=0.015, so grade = 1.50% = 15‰ ≈ 1:66.7.

Percent slope, per mille and 1:N conversion

Drawings and specifications may express the same grade in different formats. For a 1:N ratio, N = 100 / slope(%).

1.50%15‰1:66.71.50 ft (18 in)
2.00%20‰1:502.00 ft (24 in)

Required fall for common pipe runs

Once a design grade is selected, required fall is Δh = L × i. This is useful for quick profile and setting-out checks.

Pipe run0.50%1.00%1.50%2.00%
50 ft0.25 ft0.50 ft0.75 ft1.00 ft
100 ft0.50 ft1.00 ft1.50 ft2.00 ft
200 ft1.00 ft2.00 ft3.00 ft4.00 ft
Interpretation: Grade is dimensionless. A 1% slope means 1 unit of fall for every 100 units of horizontal run, regardless of whether the project uses feet or metres.

How to calculate the downstream invert

If upstream invert, pipe run and design grade are known, the downstream invert can be checked directly.

Downstream invert = Upstream invert − (L × i)
For an upstream invert of 322.67 ft, 278.9 ft run and 0.80% grade, fall ≈ 2.23 ft and downstream invert ≈ 320.44 ft.

6 checks for gravity sewer and storm-drain profiles

1. DatumConfirm both invert elevations use the same vertical reference.
2. Flow directionA negative result can indicate reverse grade or reversed input direction.
3. Hydraulic capacitySlope alone is not enough; review diameter, discharge, depth ratio and Manning capacity.
4. VelocityVery low velocity can encourage deposition; excessive velocity may create abrasion or downstream issues.
5. Cover and conflictsCheck cover, utility crossings, structures and manhole connection elevations along the profile.
6. Survey toleranceOn short runs, compare expected fall with survey and construction tolerances.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 0.5% pipe slope as a ratio?

0.5% is approximately 1:200: one unit of fall for every 200 units of horizontal run.

What percent slope is 1 in 200?

1/200 = 0.005, which is 0.50% or 5‰.

How much fall does a 1% slope create?

A 1% grade creates 1 unit of fall per 100 units of horizontal run: for example, 1 ft over 100 ft or 1 m over 100 m.

What does a negative pipe slope mean?

For the selected direction, the downstream invert is above the upstream invert. Check the input order and survey elevations.

Is pipe slope alone enough to size a gravity sewer?

No. Design flow, diameter, depth ratio, velocity, roughness, cover and governing authority criteria must also be reviewed.
