How to calculate rebar weight

A rebar takeoff starts with the unit weight of each bar size, but a practical order also depends on total bar length, quantity, laps, hooks, anchorage and an appropriate waste allowance. CivilCalc lets you enter multiple bar groups so the net weight and planning total can be checked in one place.

Rebar unit-weight formula

For metric bars, the common field approximation below follows from the circular steel area and a density near 7,850 kg/m³.

Metric unit weight (kg/m) ≈ d² / 162

For US reinforcing bars, use the standard nominal lb/ft values shown below rather than converting a nominal #bar designation as though it were a diameter.

Quick takeoff example

85 pieces of #5 bar at 20 ft each give 1,700 ft total. At 1.043 lb/ft, the net weight is about 1,773 lb. With 3% planning allowance, the quantity is about 1,826 lb (0.91 US ton).

Rebar unit weight reference table

Use this table for quick quantity checks. US bar designations and metric diameters are shown as separate reference systems.

US and metric sizes are not exact one-to-one equivalents; the columns are convenient neighboring references, not substitution guidance.

Why bar weight rises quickly with size

Steel weight per length follows cross-sectional area, so it grows approximately with the square of diameter. A modest increase in diameter can therefore produce a much larger increase in weight per foot or metre.

6 checks before finalizing a rebar order

1. Current drawingsTake quantities from the latest issued structural drawings and bar schedules.
2. Laps and splicesAdd lap lengths or account for mechanical couplers according to the detailing requirements.
3. Hooks and anchorageDo not omit bends, hooks and development lengths that are not included in straight dimensions.
4. Cutting planRelate required lengths to available stock lengths to estimate realistic cutting waste.
5. Keep sizes separateMaintain totals by bar size before combining them into an overall tonnage.
6. Theoretical vs deliveredDo not confuse theoretical takeoff weight with permitted manufacturing mass tolerances.

Frequently asked questions

How much does #5 rebar weigh per foot?

The standard nominal weight of #5 rebar is about 1.043 lb/ft.

How much does 16 mm rebar weigh per metre?

Using d²/162, 16 mm rebar is approximately 1.58 kg/m.

Should waste be added to a rebar takeoff?

Keep the net drawing quantity separate from the purchasing quantity. Cutting, laps, detailing and site conditions should be reviewed before selecting a planning allowance.

Are lap lengths included automatically?

Only the bar lengths entered in the calculator are counted. If laps, hooks or anchorage are not included in those lengths, add them separately from the project detailing.
